Artificial Insemination with either the partner's sperm (AIH) or donor sperm (AID) involves injecting a prepared sperm sample into the uterus via the cervical canal. AIH is done when there is a mild sperm problem or the woman has a cervical mucous or immunological problem. When donor sperm is used it is important that it comes from a recognised donor bank. A patient or couples should be counselled by a clinical psychologist before choosing the donor sperm option. A consent form must also be signed.
The ideal time for Artificial Insemination is determined by means of an ultrasound examination to detect when ovulation is imminent. Insemination is then done on ovulation day and on the day after ovulation to allow the most optimal chance for success. The actual insemination is a minor procedure done in the doctors rooms. Normal activities can be resumed after the insemination. Endometriosis and IUI IVF vs IUI
